Israel is powerfully leveling-up its air defense network: “Iron Beam,” a laser-based interception system, is expected to enter operational service in the second half of the year. The groundbreaking system will provide an additional layer of protection alongside Iron Dome, offering significantly lower interception costs and enhanced precision.
Yuval Steinitz, Chairman of Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, revealed new details about the system in an interview with the defense news site National Defense. He discussed the challenges faced during development, stating, “We had to find a way to bypass atmospheric interference and maintain the lasers’ strength as they were fired.”

Iron Dome and Laser Tech: A Winning Combination
“Iron Beam” is designed to counter a wide range of threats, including rockets, mortars, UAVs, and cruise missiles. The system integrates seamlessly with Iron Dome, operating through an AI-driven feedback loop that determines the best interception method. Once a threat is detected, the system automatically decides whether to neutralize it using Iron Dome missiles or its powerful laser beam.

A key advantage of the system is its drastically lower interception cost. While Iron Dome missile interceptions cost approximately $30,000 per rocket, laser-based interception costs are mere cents. Other countries developing similar laser systems report interception costs ranging from $1.50 to $13 per shot, highlighting the immense economic potential of laser-based defense.

Impressive Capabilities to Overcome Technical Challenges
“Iron Beam” is capable of operating at ranges of up to 10 kilometers and swiftly destroying targets. However, laser technology has operational limitations, as its effectiveness can be affected by cloudy weather, fog, or dust.
To overcome these challenges, “Iron Beam” employs a unique technology that fires hundreds of ultra-precise laser beams, each the size of a coin, toward the target. Once the system detects an impact on the threat, the laser beams focus on that exact point until the target is completely neutralized.

Preparing for Export
So far, Rafael has showcased “Iron Beam” at defense exhibitions in the U.S., Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates. However, its export to international markets depends on Israeli government policy. According to company officials, “If the Israeli government permits, we could see significant interest from allied nations worldwide.”
With “Iron Beam”, Israel turns innovation into defense, protecting lives with unmatched speed and precision. This is more than technology — it’s resilience, security, and a symbol of Israel’s unwavering determination to stay ahead of its enemies, defend its people, and ensure a safer future
