Led by MK Yosef Taieb, today (Tuesday) The Knesset Education Committee approved a proposal to establish a new annual commemoration day on the Israeli calendar. The day will honor the immigration of Yemenite Jews and memorialize those who lost their lives along the way. The chosen date, the 15th of Kislev, corresponds to the launch of Operation Operation ‘On Wings of Eagles’, an operation between June 1949 and September 1950 that brought 49,000 Yemenite Jews to the new state of Israel. The law was created in order to increase public awareness about the rich history and cultural heritage of Yemenite Jewry, especially as Yemen has currently re-emerged on Israel’s radar.
The Story of Yemenite Jewry
The connection between Yemenite Jews and the Land of Israel predates the Zionist movement. The first large-scale immigration took place in 1892 (5652 in the Hebrew calendar) with the “A’aleh Betamar” wave of immigration. As thousands of Yemenite Jews continued to immigrate, complex relationships and culture clashes formed with the existing Jewish community, and the newly arriving European Ashkenazi Jews.
Once the independent State of Israel was established, the situation for Jews in Yemen worsened, prompting Israel to orchestrate the unique ‘On Wings of Eagles’ operation in 1949, successfully bringing nearly all Yemenite Jews to Israel. Today, at least a quarter of a million Israelis of full or partial Yemenite descent reside in the country, greatly contributing to its cultural and social landscape.
MK Yoni Mashriki, who initiated the legislation, stated: “The immigration of Yemenite Jews is a symbol of boundless dedication, strong faith, and a centuries-long yearning to return to the land of their ancestors. For generations, the community preserved its identity and heritage under challenging conditions. When the opportunity arose, they left their homes and embarked on a grueling journey filled with hardships and dangers. This is an emotional moment where we formally recognize the extraordinary and painful journey of Yemenite Jews, whose immigration story is rooted in their deep faith and yearning for the Land of Israel.”
The new commemoration day is more than just a date on the calendar — it is a testament to the unwavering spirit and rich heritage of Yemenite Jews. By honoring their incredible journey and immense contributions to Israeli society, the day ensures their legacy will continue to inspire future generations, remaining an integral part of the nation’s story.
