After years of uncertainty, the remains of Staff Sergeant Oron Shaul were returned to Israel through a complex and courageous operation conducted by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet. Shaul, who fell during the 2014 Gaza War (Operation Protective Edge), was buried yesterday in Poriyah Illit, near Tiberias, the same cemetery where his father, Herzl, was interred in 2016. Herzl passed away without witnessing his son’s return, a grief that resonated deeply across Israel.

The funeral brought together military leaders, family, and friends, alongside singer/actor Idan Amedi, a celebrated figure in Israeli culture. Amedi, who also served in the 2014 war and was wounded last year in a military operation in the current war, performed his song Nigmar (“It’s Over”). Although originally written about a different conflict, the song’s themes of resilience and loss struck a chord with the day’s solemn atmosphere. Amedi’s presence symbolized the shared sacrifice and enduring bond among Israeli soldiers and their families.

A Symbolic Day of Loss and Return

In a message shared on social media following the funeral, Amedi reflected on the day’s emotional weight. “Today, Oron Shaul was laid to rest near his childhood home,” he wrote. “It’s deeply symbolic that on the very morning when Romi, Emily, and Doron returned to us, security forces informed Zehava, Aviram, and Ofek (Oron’s mother and brothers) that the remains of Oron had been positively identified. Only in a land steeped in sorrow can the burial of a brother also mark the closure of a circle. Only here, where grief strikes in an instant, can the act of burying a child bring a measure of solace.”

Amedi extended heartfelt thanks to those who had worked tirelessly to achieve this long-awaited moment. “To everyone who acted for this cause—openly or behind the scenes, known or unknown—thank you. You exemplify the commandment to ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’”

He concluded with a message of resolve to the family of another soldier, Hadar Goldin, whose remains are still held in Gaza since 2014. “To the dear Goldin family—Leah, Simcha, Ayelet, Chami, Tzur—I say the obvious: Operation Protective Edge isn’t over until Oron and Hadar both come home.”

A Nation’s Collective Grief and Determination

The funeral of Oron Shaul is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices borne by Israeli families and the enduring commitment to bringing every soldier home. It highlights not only the courage of those who serve but also the resilience of a nation that transforms sorrow into unity and determination.
Idan Amedi’s words and actions at the funeral encapsulate the spirit of solidarity that defines Israel in moments of profound grief. His participation, both as a veteran and an artist, bridges the personal and collective, offering a message of hope and resolve for the challenges that lie ahead.
