In response to an increase in the use of explosive devices against IDF forces and a shift in Hamas’s combat strategies—from battalions to smaller, independent cells—the Southern Command has established a special unit. This team, which includes the Air Force, the Intelligence Directorate, and explosives experts, is tasked with identifying and neutralizing Hamas operatives responsible for planting explosive devices, as well as analyzing terror infrastructure and tactics. This development was reported today (Monday) by Walla.

The New Threat: Booby-Trapped Homes

One of the main challenges the IDF faces is Hamas’s use of booby traps in homes. The militants embed explosives inside or near buildings and employ vehicle cameras to remotely detonate the devices. Some bombs are triggered by tripwires, while others are detonated using cell phones. To counter this threat, the IDF has resorted to demolishing buildings on a large scale. However, Hamas has adapted, planting explosives along roads, within structures, and in walls.

Recently, Hamas operatives have also begun scavenging unexploded ordnance from IDF operations, such as missiles and bombs containing significant explosive materials, and repurposing them into powerful IEDs.

A Comprehensive Strategy

The newly formed IDF unit is addressing these evolving threats, including preventing the hostile use of unexploded ordnance. The IDF is exploring methods for neutralizing these threats using both aerial and ground operations.
