This fast marks the breaching of Jerusalem\u2019s walls prior to the destruction of the Second Temple. It opens the Three Weeks of national mourning, known as <em>Bein HaMetzarim<\/em>, which continue until the day the Jewish people mourn the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, on <em>Tisha B\u2019Av, <\/em>the ninth day of Av.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why Do We Fast on the 17th of Tammuz?<br \/>\n<\/strong>The primary reason for the fast is to commemorate the breach of Jerusalem\u2019s walls by the Roman general Titus, approximately 2,000 years ago. This event signaled the final stage of the city\u2019s fall, culminating three weeks later with the destruction of the Second Temple.<\/p>\n<p>The Jewish Sages list five major tragedies that occurred on this date:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The breaching of Jerusalem\u2019s walls \u2013 After a three-year siege, the Romans broke through, as famine weakened the city&#8217;s defenders.<\/li>\n<li>The burning of a Torah scroll by the Greek general Apostomus (known as &#8220;Apostomus the Wicked&#8221; in Jewish tradition) \u2013 a deeply shocking act that desecrated the Torah\u2019s sanctity.<\/li>\n<li>An idol was first placed in the Temple \u2013\u00a0 which was a grave desecration of the holy site.<\/li>\n<li>The shattering of the Tablets \u2013 According to tradition, Moses descended Mount Sinai on this day, saw the sin of the Golden Calf, and broke the Tablets.<\/li>\n<li>The suspension of the daily <em>Tamid<\/em> offering \u2013 During the Babylonian seige, the daily offering ceased.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The 17th of Tammuz fast begins at dawn and ends at nightfall.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fast Beginning Times<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jerusalem: 4:31<br \/>\nTel Aviv: 4:32<br \/>\nHaifa: 4:29<br \/>\nBe\u2019er Sheva: 4:34<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fast End Times<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jerusalem: 20:13<br \/>\nTel Aviv: 20:11<br \/>\nHaifa: 20:15<br \/>\nBe\u2019er Sheva: 20:12<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_27343\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27343\" style=\"width: 724px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27343\" src=\"https:\/\/reganews.co.il\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/F230727CG15.jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"724\" height=\"483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/reganews.co.il\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/F230727CG15.jpg.webp 724w, https:\/\/reganews.co.il\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/F230727CG15.jpg-300x200.webp 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 724px) 100vw, 724px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27343\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fasting at the Western Wall | Photo: Chaim Goldberg\/Flash90<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some of the Fast Day&#8217;s Laws:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Those exempt from fasting are the ill, pregnant women, nursing mothers, women within 30 days postpartum, children below bar\/bat mitzvah age, the elderly, and the infirm.<br \/>\nBrushing teeth is permitted with caution, ensuring no water is swallowed.<br \/>\nPill-taking without water is allowed if the pills are tasteless.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Three Weeks<br \/>\n<\/strong>The period between the 17th of Tammuz and Tisha B\u2019Av is known as the &#8220;Three Weeks&#8221; or <em>Bein HaMetzarim<\/em>. During this time, mourning customs are observed for the destruction of the Temples and other tragedies in Jewish history.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Customs of the Three Weeks<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>No Weddings<\/strong> \u2013 Most Jewish customs forbid holding weddings from the 17th of Tammuz through Tisha B\u2019Av. Sephardim traditionally forbid weddings only from Rosh Chodesh Av. Nonetheless, former Sephardi Chief Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef issued a special halachic ruling allowing weddings during this time\u2014even for Ashkenazim\u2014due to the war in Iran and the fighting in Gaza. He ruled that in times of clear duress, such as this, one may and even should be lenient. It is permitted in cases of mitzvah or need, such as for the ill or infants.<\/li>\n<li><strong>No Music, Playing Instruments<\/strong>\u00a0<strong> or Dance<\/strong>\u2013 unless for a mitzvah or financial need. Vocal singing is permitted.<\/li>\n<li><strong>No Haircuts <\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Some permit it until the week of Tisha B\u2019Av. During that week, haircuts are forbidden. Women are not restricted from haircuts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Laundry and wearing freshly laundered clothes<\/strong> \u2013 is forbidden during the week of Tisha B\u2019Av, except where necessary. Ironing and shoe cleaning are allowed. Some people simply lay garments on the floor before wearing them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>No meat and wine<\/strong> &#8211; from Rosh Chodesh Av until Tisha B\u2019Av, except at <em>seudat mitzvah<\/em> or in cases of need. Some avoid wine only during the week of Tisha B\u2019Av.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Minimize celebrations and shopping<\/strong> \u2013 Events and purchases of clothing or jewelry are minimized.
