Rabbi Eyal Vered serves as the reserve rabbi of the IDF\u2019s 679th Brigade. In civilian life, he is a community rabbi and a board member of the Tzohar Rabbinical Organization. Amid the heated debate surrounding the draft law\u2014often accompanied by sharp criticism of the Haredi community\u2014Rabbi Vered offers a different perspective, one that begins with changing the public discourse. He advocates for a path toward genuine Haredi integration in the IDF, based on mutual respect rather than coercion or condescension.<\/p>\n

A long-serving reservist, Rabbi Vered views military service not just as a duty, but as a mitzvah (commandment). Since the start of the war, he has completed over 200 days of reserve duty, leading by powerful example. His children also serve in various IDF units.<\/p>\n

It Starts with Changing the Conversation<\/strong>
\n“Do we want to be right and soak in some sea of moral superiority, or do we want real results?” Rabbi Vered asks at the start of his conversation with RegaNEWS.<\/p>\n

“The Haredi community is already highly mobilized,” he continues. “It mobilizes around the values it believes in\u2014Torah study and acts of kindness. Dozens of organizations like ZAKA, Ezer Mizion, and Yad Sarah serve the entire nation of Israel. They are living proof of that.”<\/p>\n

Not \u201cDraft Dodgers\u201d \u2014 A Giving Society<\/strong>
\nThe main issue, according to Rabbi Vered, is the divisive public discourse. Rather than viewing the Haredi community as one that refuses to serve, he believes it should be recognized for its immense contribution to Israeli society through the values of chesed<\/em> (lovingkindness) and Torah study. “We need to change how we look at the Haredi community,” he explains. “See it as a society that devotes itself daily to the values it holds dear\u2014not as one shirking responsibility.”<\/p>\n

Rabbi Vered argues that the accusatory tone toward the Haredi public achieves nothing. If we want to see real change in the enlistment process, we must take a broader view and understand the community\u2019s deep commitment to preserving its values.<\/p>\n

Not Through Force<\/strong>
\nRegarding the draft itself, Rabbi Vered supports enlisting those who are not engaged in full-time Torah study\u2014but insists that any meaningful change must be gradual. “If we want to see the Haredi public enlisting in the IDF, coercion is not the answer,” he says. “What\u2019s needed is the creation of frameworks\u2014such as Haredi Hesder yeshivot\u2014that allow Haredi soldiers to combine Torah study with meaningful military service.”<\/p>\n

According to Rabbi Vered, there must be frameworks that genuinely respect the Haredi way of life and enable service that fits their lifestyle. “Instead of forcing them into unsuitable frameworks, let\u2019s establish yeshivot where young men can study, serve in combat roles, return to yeshiva, and then receive preparation for academic life,” he proposes.<\/p>\n

The Hashmonaim Brigade: A Major Step Forward<\/strong>
\nSpeaking about the Hashmonaim Brigade, Rabbi Vered stresses that it represents significant progress. “This brigade is a success. It enables full integration of Haredi soldiers and provides a framework suited to their needs,” he says. “It\u2019s an excellent example of how to build a respectful and appropriate military track for the Haredi sector.”<\/p>\n

Incentives<\/strong>
\nRabbi Vered does not oppose sanctions\u2014but believes they must be measured and backed by positive incentives. “We should encourage and reward Haredi men who enlist\u2014whether through academic opportunities, scholarships, or other benefits,” he says. “Right now, there\u2019s no preferential treatment for Haredi volunteers, and that\u2019s a mistake. They should receive incentives that genuinely encourage enlistment.”<\/p>\n

He adds that in cases where someone neither studies nor enlists, sanctions may be appropriate to support meaningful military service. Still, he emphasizes, “Coercion won\u2019t produce positive results. We should focus on encouragement, not punishment.”<\/p>\n

National Service as a Parallel Option<\/strong>
\nRabbi Vered does not rule out national service as a solution for those unable to serve in the IDF. “National service can definitely be a parallel track\u2014but it\u2019s not a substitute for military service. We must acknowledge that the IDF needs combat soldiers.”<\/p>\n

Mutual Respect<\/strong>
\nIn conclusion, Rabbi Vered calls for an end to inflammatory rhetoric and a shift toward dialogue rooted in mutual respect. “The Haredi community is a central part of the People of Israel,” he says. “Our discourse must come from a place of appreciation\u2014not as if we’re enemies.
