Two blessings are recited: &#8220;to light the Yom Tov candle&#8221; and &#8220;Shehecheyanu.&#8221; Outside of Israel, candles are also lit on Monday night \u2014 using a flame lit in advance. Festive meals and <em data-start=\"1757\" data-end=\"1766\">Kiddush<\/em> are held during the holiday, including the &#8220;Yizkor&#8221; memorial prayer in synagogues.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1851\" data-end=\"1898\"><strong data-start=\"1851\" data-end=\"1898\"><em>Tikkun Leil Shavuot<\/em>: Why Stay Up All Night?<br \/>\n<\/strong>The night of Shavuot is devoted to Torah study \u2014 a custom that serves as a <em data-start=\"1975\" data-end=\"1983\">tikkun<\/em> (rectification) for the Israelites\u2019 oversleeping before their late arrival at Mount Sinai. The study includes selected passages from the Bible, Mishnah, and Kabbalah. Many communities recite the &#8220;Tikkun Leil Shavuot&#8221; booklet.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2211\" data-end=\"2266\"><strong data-start=\"2211\" data-end=\"2266\">Reading the Ten Commandments: Renewing the Covenant<br \/>\n<\/strong>On the day of Shavuot, the Ten Commandments are read publicly from the Torah. Tradition teaches that all Jewish souls \u2014 past, present, and future \u2014 stood together at the foot of Mount Sinai.
