As the bathing season kicks off, so does a unique initiative blending science, environmentalism, and civic engagement: the \u201cMarine and Coastal Citizen Science\u201d project, now entering its second year.<\/p>\n
Organized by the environmental nonprofit EcoOcean, the program invites volunteers of all ages\u2014from local beach lovers to environmental enthusiasts\u2014to help collect scientific data from Israel\u2019s shores and shallow waters. Field Days, Training, and Marine Monitoring<\/strong> \nThroughout the summer, field days and training workshops will be held at beaches in Acre, Tel Aviv, Palmahim, Nitzanim, Ma\u2019ayan Zvi, and Poleg, among others.<\/p>\n
Volunteers will learn to identify key species that serve as biological indicators of coastal health\u2014including sand crabs, guitarfish, clams, sea urchins, lobsters, and lionfish.<\/p>\n

What Is Citizen Science?<\/strong> \nThe project is rooted in the principles of citizen science, where non-professionals contribute to real scientific research. The program adheres to high scientific standards, and the data collected is shared with the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, the Morris Kahn Marine Research Station, the Society for the Protection of Nature, the Israel Center for Citizen Science, and the Sharks in Israel NGO.<\/p>\n
More Than Data: Community, Purpose, and Action<\/strong> \nEinat Zuckerman Tal, Community Engagement Director at EcoOcean, emphasized that the initiative is about more than marine biology: \u201cThis isn\u2019t just scientific work\u2014it\u2019s about belonging, purpose, and a direct emotional connection to the sea. When people are personally involved, the impact extends far beyond the beach.\u201d<\/p>\n
