In her free time, she takes part in Magen David Adom\u2019s first aid training course for youth. Just before the course\u2019s midterm exam\u2014where participants are required to demonstrate their understanding and ability to recognize the signs of a stroke\u2014Lana experienced an extraordinary event of her own.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cHe wasn\u2019t speaking clearly\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\nOne afternoon after school, she noticed her father, Rafael, was behaving strangely.<br \/>\n\u201cHe wasn\u2019t speaking clearly,\u201d she recalls. \u201cHe was making odd movements and collapsed onto the couch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Drawing on what she had learned in the course, Lana quickly performed the basic medical assessments she had been taught. She suspected her father might be having a stroke.<br \/>\n\u201cI told my mom we needed to take him to the hospital immediately,\u201d she remembers. \u201cWhen we arrived, they sedated and intubated my father. The doctors then discovered it wasn\u2019t a stroke\u2014but a life-threatening bacterial infection in his brain. It gave me the tools to recognize that something was wrong. I think everyone should know at least the basics of how to identify cases like this. I joined MDA so I could help people and save lives\u2014I never imagined it would hit so close to home, and that I\u2019d end up saving my father\u2019s life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rafael, deeply moved, shared:<br \/>\n\u201cAfter I woke up, they told me what Lana had done and how quick she was to act.
