In a forceful response to recent violence targeting Syria\u2019s Druze minority, the Israeli Air Force conducted a precision airstrike overnight near the presidential palace compound of Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa in Damascus.<\/p>\n

A Clear Message to Syrian Regime<\/strong>
\nThe Israeli government confirmed the operation Friday morning in a joint statement by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz: \u201cIsrael carried out a strike near the Syrian presidential compound last night. We will not allow hostile forces to move south of Damascus or pose any threat to the Druze community.\u201d<\/p>\n

Katz emphasized that Israel’s commitment to protecting the Druze in Syria stems from the profound bond between Israel\u2019s Druze citizens and the state. \u201cWe owe it to the Druze community\u2014both in Israel and in Syria. Their loyalty and contribution to Israel\u2019s defense are unmatched,\u201d Katz added.<\/p>\n

Background: Sectarian Violence Ignites Tensions<\/strong>
\nThe strike follows growing reports of attacks on Druze civilians in the Damascus suburbs, sparked by sectarian unrest. The violence was triggered by a provocative audio clip circulating online that insulted the Prophet Muhammad\u2014sparking outrage among Sunni groups.<\/p>\n

Although the Druze community disavowed the clip, jihadist militias aligned with the Julani regime reportedly turned their anger toward Druze populations in the area. \u201cIf the assaults on the Druze do not cease, we will respond with great severity,\u201d warned Katz in a direct message to Syrian leadership.<\/p>\n

Druze Soldiers Urge Action\u2014and Offer to Cross the Border<\/strong>

\nAnger spilled over into Druze towns across northern Israel, where spontaneous protests blocked major highways including Route 6 near Elyakim Junction, Kabri Junction, and Ammiad Junction. Tires were set ablaze and traffic came to a standstill. Meanwhile, hundreds of Druze IDF soldiers\u2014both active-duty and reservists\u2014formally petitioned the government for permission to cross the border and protect their families in Syria.<\/p>\n

Medical Evacuations from Syria to Israel<\/strong>
\nIn recent days, the IDF has also evacuated wounded Syrian Druze civilians to hospitals in Israel for medical treatment. These operations have taken place quietly but underscore the urgent humanitarian situation on the ground.<\/p>\n
