It is the eighth as counting from the Jewish New Year of <em>Rosh Hashana<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A month of Introspection<\/strong><br \/>\nIyar has no religious holiday, but every single day of the month is included in the<em> <span class=\"glossary_item\">Sefirat HaOmer<\/span>\u00a0<\/em>counting\u2014the\u00a0<span class=\"glossary_item\">commandment<\/span> to count the days between the holiday of the exodus- <span class=\"glossary_item\">Passover-<\/span> till the holiday of <span class=\"glossary_item\"><em>Shavuot<\/em>, celebrating the reception of the Torah on Mount Sinai<\/span>. The counting begins on the day when the <em>Omer<\/em> Offering of freshly harvested barley was made in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem (an &#8220;<em>omer&#8221;<\/em> is a measure), thus its name. <em>Sefirat HaOmer<\/em> is considered to be a time introspection and self-refinement, a time to prepare for receiving the <span class=\"glossary_item\">Torah<\/span> anew at the end of the count.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Second Passover: the importance of second chances<br \/>\n<\/strong>The 14th day of Iyar, mirroring the 14th day of Nissan when Passover starts, is <em><span class=\"glossary_item\">Pesach Sheni<\/span><\/em>, &#8220;S<span class=\"glossary_item\">econd Passover<\/span>.\u201d Traditionally, this holiday was granted by G-d at the request of those who were unable to reach the Temple or bring the Passover sacrifice at the right time.\u00a0 On Iyar, they get a second chance to give their offering.\u00a0 <em>Pesach Sheni<\/em> is a reminder that it\u2019s never too late when it comes to spirituality.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lag BaOmer<br \/>\n<\/strong>The 18th day of Iyar, the 33rd day of the counting, is known as <em><span class=\"glossary_item\">Lag BaOmer<\/span><\/em>, literally, 33 (in Hebrew letters) of the &#8220;<em>Omer<\/em>&#8220;, the count from the time of the <em>Omer<\/em> offering. It is\u00a0the anniversary of the passing of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, the author of the Zohar, the foundational text of Kabbalah.\u00a0Rabbi\u00a0<span class=\"glossary_item\">Shimon bar Yochai<\/span> asked his disciples to mark the date as \u201cthe day of my joy,\u201d when his life\u2019s work was achieved.
