The key to success, he emphasized, lies in mutual respect and collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe work together on kibbutz committees, in cultural events, and holiday celebrations,\u201d he explained. \u201cFor example, on Purim, the secular residents hold a costume party while the religious ones join the Megillah reading.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even in sensitive areas like the swimming pool, they\u2019ve found solutions: \u201cThere are separate swim days for men and women, and other days that are mixed,\u201d he said. \u201cOn Shabbat, the pool is open for secular residents, and the religious members respect that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He dismissed claims that religious families are trying to dominate the kibbutz. \u201cThat\u2019s simply not true. Members of the emergency squad\u2014religious and secular alike\u2014fought bravely to defend the kibbutz. \u201cThe emotional bond and unity that formed were incredible.\u201d Two members of the squad, Yedidya Raziel and Amichai Witzan z\u201dl, were killed in the fighting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur security isn\u2019t just about weapons\u2014it\u2019s about people and their connection to one another. When we\u2019re strong on the inside, we can face anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elia, now the commander of the emergency squad that then saved many families during the attack, reflected on his journey. His family moved to Kerem Shalom in 2018, hoping to be part of a mixed community. \u201cI saw it as a place where I could give back to the community and contribute. There was a strong will within the community to build those connections together. We established a community leadership team to promote open dialogue and cooperation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the end of the day,\u201d he added, \u201cwhat connects us isn\u2019t just geography\u2014it\u2019s shared values like mutual help and a sense of family. Everyone needs to take one step toward someone they don\u2019t know\u2014that\u2019s how we create a wider circle of cooperation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yigal concluded, \u201cThe real challenge is to keep our spirit alive even when the security situation improves. We believe in our future here, and the bond between religious and secular residents is key to how we face every challenge ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elia added that Democratic Union leader Yair Golan recently visited the kibbutz and was deeply impressed by the community\u2019s atmosphere and unity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>With the Right Incentives, Families Will Come<\/strong><br \/>\nLast week, a community open house drew dozens of families. According to data from the Kibbutz Movement\u2019s information center, around 1,700 people are currently exploring a move to Western Negev kibbutzim. If the incentives are there\u2014people will come.\u201d He stressed, however, that the state must first prioritize bringing the hostages home: \u201cThat is the highest mission of all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a time of growing societal rifts across Israel, Kerem Shalom stands as a powerful example of what\u2019s possible.
