Newly appointed Chief of Staff Major General Eyal Zamir conducted his first visit today to the Israel Air Force base by Nevatim in the Negev (southern Israel), along with Air Force Commander Major General Tomer Bar. The two reviewed the achievements and operational capabilities demonstrated by the Air Force during the war, as well as the main lessons learned from the October 7th investigation. True to the Air Force’s specialty in debriefings, the lessons have already mostly begun to be implemented in the field.<\/p>\n

During his visit, the Chief of Staff praised the abundance of excellent personnel serving in the Air Force; technicians, administrative and logistics staff, staff officers, air defense personnel, fighters, pilots, and especially the committed reservists who performed hundreds of reserve days since the war began. “We have an excellent Air Force,” Zamir concluded, “based on outstanding soldiers and commanders, and an excellent Air Force commander who led the force to tremendous achievements.”<\/p>\n

The Central Strategic Tool<\/strong>
\nZamir’s visit took place the morning after an extensive Israeli Air Force airstrike in Syria, in which bases used by Assad\u2019s army in the Daraa area were attacked. Such strikes demonstrate that the Air Force has remained Israel\u2019s primary strategic tool for projecting power in the region. Additionally, with the expiration of the Houthis’ ultimatum in Yemen, there’s an increasing expectation the Air Force may need to combat them again in the near future. With the heightened chance of renewed fighting in the Gaza Strip, reports of the Chief of Staff preparing for an extensive ground maneuver points to the fact that the Air Force will also play a significant role.<\/p>\n

New Law Proposed Today in the Knesset<\/strong>
\nConcurrently to Zamir’s visit, the Knesset approved a law proposal today related to the Negev, a plan to build Israel\u2019s new civilian airport in the area of the base within five years from the law’s approval. The new airport is expected to increase air traffic and tourism in the southern part of the country, particularly in the Be’er Sheva area. This would both assist with employment in the south of Israel, and allow for a reduction of the pressure at Ben Gurion Airport, which has been dealing with significant congestion in recent years.<\/p>\n
